Velma Capps Weeks, 87

WILMINGTON — Velma Capps Weeks, a beloved member of her community, passed away on August 24, 2023, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Velma was born on May 7, 1936, in Selma, North Carolina, and at the time of her passing she was 87 years old.

Velma dedicated many years of her life to her work, starting as an Administrative Assistant at the North Carolina State University Civil Engineering Department for 22 years. Later, she served with the State of Alaska Public Safety Department for 7 years. Velma’s commitment and dedication were evident in her professional endeavors, leaving a lasting impact on those she worked with.

Outside of her career, Velma had a vibrant personality with a wide range of interests. She adored the color red and proudly supported NC State University as a devoted fan. Known as a Southern Belle, Velma always carried herself with grace and elegance. She found joy in birdwatching, even as her mobility declined and she relied on her lift chair. Of course, red cardinals were her favorite.

Velma was an active member of various organizations throughout her life, including Myrtle Grove Baptist Church in Wilmington, Forest Hills Baptist Church in Wilson, the Red Hat Society, and the Friends Card Club in both Wilmington and Cary. She cherished the connections she made through these associations and valued the friendships that blossomed.

Velma’s education was an important part of her life. She graduated from Selma High School, where she excelled academically and served as the Class Salutatorian. She furthered her education at Hardbarger Business School in Raleigh, graduating in 1955.

Velma is preceded in death by her parents, Hubert Walton Capps and Clentis Wall Capps, as well as her twin brother Elmer Eugene Capps and sister Betsy Capps Pearce. She was also preceded in death by her husband Wayne Weeks.

Velma is survived by her loving daughters, Angela Baker Harris (Randy) and Beverly Baker-Newsholme (Erik), and her cherished grandson Cameron Baker Harris. She is also survived by her sisters Mildred Capps Morgan (Jim) and Verla Capps Lewis, many special nieces and nephews, and her beloved friends Elaine Hill, Regina Kutschka, Helen Courtney, Vera Gadson, and Kathy Meetze. A special thank you to Dr. Dean Karras and staff of Novant Health for their decades-long compassionate care, and to the incredible staff at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, especially Tia, Michael, Shannon and Nancy.

A memorial service to honor Velma’s life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced. In remembrance of Velma, she always said, “Tell me you love me while I can hear you and give me flowers while I am living”. May her memory live on in the hearts of those who loved her, forever cherishing the time spent with this remarkable woman.
