Aged care resident dies in reclining chair accident at Victorian hospital

A Victorian hospital has been charged after an aged care resident died following an accident on a malfunctioning reclining chair.

The 93-year-old fell when the back of the chair detached as a staff member tried to move it in October 2021.

The woman, who was a resident at the Morrie Evans Wing at Benalla Health, fractured one of her ribs as a result.

She died a week later.

WorkSafe has charged Benalla Health with failing to ensure persons other than employees were not exposed to risks to their health and safety.

It’s alleged the aged care provider failed to ensure chairs used to transport residents were regularly assessed for safety.

The case is listed for a filing hearing in the Benalla Magistrates Court next month.

Benalla is located 212km north east of Melbourne.
